DR ANDREW DEAN

Associate Professor Andrew Dean MBBS FACEM, has been practising emergency medicine for almost 40 years. He is Acting Head of Melbourne Clinical School, School of Medicine Sydney, University of Notre Dame Australia, and the Director of Clinical Training, Emergency Department St. John of God Hospital, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia

We work in a stressful profession.
Healthcare systems are over-stretched and the ‘system’ improvements required need additional resources and structural changes.
Mindfulness is a way of enhancing our ability to stay in our chosen careers, to reduce the impact of stress, and to build emotional resilience.
Mindfulness alone is not the answer to all of the ‘system issues’, but it can be a crucial part of our ‘own answer’, because when we approach our days with unshakeable mindfulness, stress no longer dominates our days, but fades into the background, becoming the smallest part of how we experience life.
Dr Andrew Dean

Unshakeable Mindfulness is the ability to stay calm, clear, and in control when chaos hits, whether in a trauma bay or in everyday life. It’s not vague or “new age”; it’s a skill. A discipline. A daily practice that quiets the mental and emotional noise so we can think clearly, lead with strength, and nurture those around us.
Dr Andrew Dean

Mindfulness has such a huge role to play amongst medical staff. We were lucky enough to bring Andrew to Darwin virtually for a JMO teaching session, which was amazing. Not only was mindfulness and its importance broken down as it applies to doctors, we also had the opportunity to put it into practice.
I encourage all doctors who may be sceptical or haven't tried it to read this book and get in touch with Andrew.

Through meditation, we train the mind to follow instructions... to slow the heart, steady the breath, and sharpen our focus - so that in the moments that matter most, we are ready.

SAFETY DISCLAIMER:
If you have mental health needs, see a trained professional provider. I am an emergency physician who has practiced meditation for many years, but I am not a trained mental health clinician. Mindfulness techniques do support mental health and resilience, but they do not aim to replace professional mental health care, and the appropriate use of therapy or medication.
